jewel box: revisiting exercise — mother i circle portraits
notes:

This workshop is a group effort and involves a bit more organizing and instruction than other mother i workshops, so read carefully.

In this project, each mom will take home a portrait of herself that is the collaborative effort of all the moms in her circle. Each mom begins her own portrait by writing a 5 to 10 word sentence that describes her creative spirit or her "creative spirit sentence." Once each member of the circle has completed their sentence, each mom then passes her portrait to the mom on their left. Next, using the words on the page as a guide, each mom then adds to (draws, paints, etc.) the portrait in front of her for a specified amount of time and then passes it on to the next mom, and the next, until all the moms have contributed to each portrait. Once your mother i circle portrait with your creative spirit sentence is in your possession, put the finishing touches on it or leave it as is.

Step-by-step
1. Decide as a circle how much time you are going to each spend per rotation — you might want to use a timer. (for example: If you have 5 moms in a circle and you each use 10 minutes on a piece, you’ve used up 50 minutes).
2. Write a 5 to 10 word sentence that reflects your creative spirit on a sheet of heavy drawing paper.
3. Pass your portrait paper to the person sitting on your left.
4. Contribute to the portrait in front of you using the "creative spirit sentence" to guide you. Write, draw, paste, color — add what feels right!
5. After the designated time is up, pass the portrait to the person on your left.
6. Continue steps 3 through 5 until all the moms in the circle have contributed to each mom’s portrait.
7. Once your mother i circle portrait is in your hands, add some finishing touches if you’d like.
8. Take it home and frame it!
9. Send us a photo and we'll post it in the gallery!
