jewel box: reflective conversation — listen
notes:

The reflective conversation, "listen", is a circle discussion on one or more musicians who are mothers and their music. Before your circle meets you will need to decide as a group the artist you wish to review and discuss. You may want to compare two or three artists' musical styles, character and words. Listen to the music of the artist/mother individually before the meeting — not as a group. You may want to choose a particular CD or song for review — this may require some group effort if some of the members don't own the selected CD or are unable to purchase it. Remember that a limited selection of CD's can be borrowed from your local library. We've suggested a few musicians who are mothers below.

Patty Smith
Sinead O'Connor
Diana Ross
Tori Amos (new mom!)
Wynona Judd
Faith Hill
Whitney Houston
Reba McIntire
Madonna
Amy Rigby,
Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders)

Use these topic ideas to help lead your discussion:

What is the history of these musicians?
How do you think motherhood has influenced the artist? The music?
How do you relate to the artist?
How do the words effect your image of the artist?
Does this artist have a message? Can you identify with it?
How are your preferences to one particular artist related to motherhood?
